Fourier Transform

The Fourier transform (FT) converts a time domain to a frequency domain. In the case of NMR spectroscopy this is the conversion of the free induction decay (FID) into a frequency domain spectrum. Today this is done using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) which is based on the discrete Fourier transform.

A interactive web tool to help understand the Fourier transform as it applies to NMR spectroscopy (Esvan & Zeinyeh, J. Chem. Educ. 2020, 97, 263-264) is available here.
