π/2 (or 90°) Pulse

A π/2 (or 90°) pulse is the most common way of starting an NMR experiment. The effect of this pulse is to convert longitudinal magnetisation (IZ) to transverse magnetisation (in this case -IY). This is normally a high power or “hard” pulse which will excite a large bandwidth due to its short duration.
